How to Quit a Bad Habit in 30 Days
August 10, 2026
Every habit you want to remove has three parts: a cue, a routine, and a payoff. Attack the cue and the payoff, and the routine dies without a fight.
STEP 1: NAME THE CUE, NOT THE HABIT
I want to quit vaping is useless. I vape when I step outside after lunch and when I am waiting for something to load is workable. Track for three days and write down where and when it happens. The list is short and boringly predictable.
STEP 2: RAISE THE FRICTION
Do not rely on refusing. Rely on distance. Delete the app, cancel the subscription, keep the phone out of the bedroom, do not keep it in the house. Each extra step you insert between cue and routine buys you the ten seconds where a decision is possible.
STEP 3: FILL THE HOLE
A removed habit leaves an empty slot at a specific time. If you do not fill it deliberately, the old routine will move back in. Replace 10 p.m. scrolling with reading. Replace the after-work drink with a walk. Same time, same duration, different act.
STEP 4: COUNT DAYS, HONESTLY
Track it as a Quit habit and mark each clean day. A visible strip of clean days becomes something you protect. If you break it, mark the break the same day and note the trigger. Hidden resets are how a 40-day fiction gets built.
STEP 5: EXPECT WEEK TWO
Days 8 to 14 are where the novelty is gone and the discomfort remains. Nothing has gone wrong. Reduce your other commitments that week and keep the floor version of everything.
AT DAY 30
You will not be cured. You will have proof, in writing, that you can go thirty days. That proof is the actual asset. Run the next thirty.
